it's beginning to look a lot like christmas

Last night for Family Home Evening we pulled out our small collection of Christmas decorations and set to work stringing holiday cheer around the apartment. As I unwrapped each fragile figurine, Garrett and Caleb quickly grew overjoyed at the prospect of "new toys," subsequently disappointed when I explained that they weren't toys but rather decorations, and ever resourceful when I attempted to move them out of their reach.

Both of the boys were helpful decorators. Caleb, of his own accord, set to work removing books from the bookshelves, which I can only assume was to make room for the Christmas books. Garrett, meanwhile, took it upon himself to rearrange the nativity.

Christmas may very well be about Christ, but I guess you've got to squeeze Santa in somehow.

After everything except the tree decorations (the tree is coming later) had been displayed throughout the house, we gathered in the kitchen for some mugs of delicious hot mint malt. As we sat down around the table, Garrett picked up the two ceramic striped candlestick holders that had made their appearance with the rest of the holiday decor and, apparently thrilled by their novelty, happily started clapping them together as he shouted, "Look, fun toys! Fun toys!" Much to his dismay, we stopped him before anything shattered. I suppose it's a good thing that in Garrett's world, hot chocolate can cure just about anything.

Hot Mint Malt

6 chocolate covered cream-filled mint patties (I used one box of NECCO/Haviland Thin Mints)
5 cups milk
1/2 cup chocolate malted milk powder
1 tsp vanilla
Whipped cream or marshmallows for serving

In a crock pot, combine mint patties with milk, malted milk powder, and vanilla. Heat on low for 2 hours. Beat with an electric mixer until frothy. Pour into cups; top with whipped cream or marshmallows. Makes 6 servings.

You still have a box of Thin Mints in your house? How is that even possible? Girl Scout season was ages ago....no way would a box make it that long at my house! We'll have to try it with Keebler Grasshoppers. Have you ever done the thing where you make hot chocolate and use a mint cookie as a straw of sorts? Basically, you bite a little edge off the top and bottom of the cookie, suck some hot cocoa up through it, then toss the whole thing in your mouth before it disintegrates. It's messy but heavenly. My kids LOVE it!

No, don't use Girl Scout Thin Mints/Grasshopper cookies for this recipe -- use the Thin Mints that are like mini York Peppermint Patties. Those ones. I don't think the cookies would work as well. But I guess it couldn't hurt to try.

Also, yes, I've been drinking hot chocolate through Grasshopper cookies for years and years. Best winter treat ever.

I bought a Fisher Price nativity set this year and it was the best 30 dollars I've spent. My kids love it and now they leave my other decorations alone. I actually found it at Target, but I think you can actually order it directly from Fisher Price. I love having our decorations out!

I've wanted to get that Little People nativity, but just haven't done it yet. One of these days...hopefully before they're too old to appreciate playing with it. :)

I love how Garrett put Santa in the nativity. That's so cute! That mint malt sounds divine. I might just have to try it out. Thanks for the recipe!

Our "baby's first christmas" ornament is now in its final resting place of the trash. But we've moved on (mostly) and now they stay away from the tree! Sacrifice brings forth the blessings of a good christmas.

I have been wanting to embroider the names of our family on stockings too. Any tips on how to do it?

My mother-in-law made our stockings, embroidered names and all. I've been trying to teach myself some basic embroidery stitches, but I'm not really the best one to go to for advice. I think, though, that she might have used the stem stitch (Joyce, is that right?). I did recently find a very helpful website that teaches you embroidery stitches:

Anyway, hope this helps, and good luck doing yours!

I think the stitch is either called the stem stitch or outline stitch. It's done forward and backwards overlapping a little. You can find websites that show how to do the basic stitches. Good luck!

I've been searching etsy for stockings b/c ours are lame and we don't have any for the triplets. How do ppl normally acquire stockings? Like do you buy yourself a stocking? What would it take to persuade your MIL to make us cute stockings? :) Seriously, does she have an etsy shop?
