to be a pioneer

You don't have to push a handcart,
Leave your family dear,
Or walk a thousand miles or more
To be a pioneer.

You do need to have great courage,
Faith to conquer fear,
And work with might for a cause that's right
To be a pioneer.

Today is Pioneer Day, a Mormon holiday marked by Latter-day Saints across the world, to commemorate the arrival of the early pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley. The Saints here in Brooklyn don't celebrate Pioneer Day like they do in Utah. Perhaps that is because of the geographical distance, or maybe it's because most of the members here do not share the same pioneer ancestry as their Western cousins. But that doesn't make any one of them any less a pioneer.

The Saints in Brooklyn, whether they hail from Utah or Ukraine, are pioneers in every sense of the word. Some of them have traveled here from great distances. Some have sacrificed everything they have to practice what they believe. Some are fulfilling demanding leadership callings before their 30th birthdays.

They are courageous. They are charting new territory. They are faithful. Even when it's hard.

And it is such a privilege to be one of them.

Thanks to all the pioneers throughout the world. We are a better people because of each of them.

Yeah! while I agree with you 100%, I do have to say that I was pretty sad when the primary kids, in our DC ward, didn't know what a handcart was.

Peter and his dad made dutch oven dinner and desserts for 7 adults and 5 children last night. They were all very good.
