Take cold showers. And lots of them.
Limit activity. Garrett is glued to PBS, I can't get my nose out of my book (The Help, in case you're wondering), and Caleb, who is the most active of us all, tends to plop down in the middle of a room and only play with those toys within his reach.
Hole up in the only room with air conditioning. We have a small window a/c unit that we keep in the boys room (we're all about sacrifice here). When it's hot, we spend as much time as we can in here with the a/c on and the door closed. I'm not opposed to visiting public places with better air conditioning, like museums or the library, but going someplace else means, you know, having to go outside. In the sweltering heat. No, thank you.
Run fans full blast in the rest of the house. We might only own one little a/c unit, but we're well-equipped with lots of fans (and a cross breeze, when one blows in off the harbor), and while they don't do a thing to condition the air, the breezes feel nice.
Venture outside only for park sprinklers or ice cream. We left the house twice yesterday: once so Garrett could cool off by running through the park sprinklers (at the park down by the harbor where there's usually a bit of a breeze),
and a second time to get ice cream so we could...
Make and eat popsicles. I threw some vanilla ice cream in the blender with some frozen mixed berries and a splash of milk and called it good. I don't own popsicle molds, but small dixie cups and popsicle sticks make a fine substitute.
Make dinner, but do your best to not have to cook it. Last night we had cold cantaloupe soup, even though I think it's technically a dessert soup. Tonight we've having spinach salad with deviled eggs on the side.
Drink lots (and lots) of water. This one's pretty self explanatory, but do yourself a favor and make sure it's ice cold.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get out of the sweltering sauna my living room has turned into and back to the boys' room and their air conditioning. Maybe I'll bring some ice cream with me.
How do you beat the heat?

We were watching the news last night. The east coast is experiencing a nasty heat wave, while those of us on the west coast are experiencing June gloom in July. Yesterday's temperature was roughly 68 degrees, we're used to mid to upper 80's or 90's by now. We've had maybe two hot days in the last two months. We have AC and I'm usually the wimp in the house so I turn it on frequently(though I haven't so far this summer). Otherwise we have two pools in our complex that we visit to cool off, or eat popsicles and keep all the house fans on too. Growing up we made apple juice/orange juice popsicles. They were great and you really felt like you were getting a treat.
oh my. yes, we are appreciating our a/c right now. good luck!
Blech. Nasty, humid head and no A/C is rough. The summer I spent in Salzburg was the hottest on record and we were next to a river with no A/C = miserable. I took 1-2 showers each day, and then to be able to fall asleep I'd slather lotion on myself and sleep in front of the fan. Worked pretty well. We drank iced mint tea, which was a great treat (make it hot and sweeten it, then pour in a pitcher with ice. Mmm.). I've also heard that eating spicy foods can help "cool" you off because it ups your core temperature and then makes it feel cooler outside your body.
This summer I'm unwilling to be hot and miserable. Our house is a lovely 73 degrees. We'll pay for it, but it's fabulous all the same.
Dude, no A/C stinks. I feel for you.
Ok. We had a neighbor in California who would put her garments in her freezer before she put them on. Not sure why she put her sacred underwear in the same appliance that houses food (or why she even admitted this to us), but whatever. Not that I'm recommending this at all; this post just made me think of it....and chuckle.
I personally like smoothies, swimming pools, and cold drinks. If I pull my hair back in a ponytail after showering (instead of blow-drying) it seems to keep me a little cooler as well.
Good luck!
What do you think of The Help? MidCityGal just finished it and loved it. I'm going to dive into it tonight since we just got done with our book club and I've got more time to read something else. I've heard nothing but rave reviews.
Desmama - "The Help" is excellent. I can hardly put it down.
Dude. I'm so sorry. It's supposed to hit 90 degrees here today (it was 65 on the 4th of July) and we have no central air here either. Should be interesting.
Also loved The Help. Couldn't stop reading it till it was over, and kind of missed the characters for a few days after it was...
Your list is almost identical to mine. I thought I was having a heat stroke on Tuesday.
We all wish we could have central a/c, but it's just not possible. New York City is a pretty large city but with lots of very old apartment buildings. Unfortunately, the design of these old structures do not allow the extra room needed for such upgrades as central air. It's just not feasible. Also, decades ago, it was uncommon to have such high temperatures and heat waves (three or more days of 95+ degrees) that last for more than a week. We have them now here in the east coast thanks to global warming. In the meantime, it's frequent cold showers and lots of ice pops!
You could come and visit me :) I have lovely central air and a nice guest room with your name written on it.
Ugh, that is the pits. we're not hot at all. It was hot in Utah last week (or at least I thought it was hot). That was perfect to the cold wind we're getting now. I would prefer cold to hot though. Good luck.
Yes, I was just going to say that I read the book this week and LOVED it. My kids were crawling all over me and yet I didn't care. I could not stop reading it. So compelling!
