the children's museum of manhattan, and other treasures on the upper west side

Blake had the day off of work, so we seized the opportunity to head up to the Upper West Side to visit the Children's Museum of Manhattan. If you want my opinion, I think that the Brooklyn Children's Museum is better, but my opinion is not what counts right now. Garrett and Caleb had a GREAT time there today exploring, splashing, playing, and fiddling with all kinds of buttons, knobs, and wheels.

At the Toys: The Inside Story exhibit, we learned how different toys work (and now I know the secrets behind the Etch-a-Sketch).

Both boys really loved the City Splash area outside in the courtyard, and both got very wet to prove it -- Caleb especially.

In the PlayWorks, which was geared for very young children, Caleb had a great time crawling among building blocks and checking out that smiley boy in the mirror, while Garrett explored some simple machines and drove a fire truck and a city bus.

We kind of sort of maybe had to bribe Garrett to leave, but we made good on our promise to get a treat after we left because lo and behold, Zabar's was just around the corner. Zabar's is a New York City original that I have been wanting to visit for a long time, so of course we went in. We drooled over (and eventually purchased some) of their mouth-watering selection of cheeses, but the number one reason we stopped here was for baked goods. Rumor has it that Zabar's is home to the best black and white cookies in the city. We bought a small box and I, for one, am here to confirm that rumor. They are delicious.

But Zabar's wasn't our only bonus on this visit to the Upper West Side. As we came up out of the subway at the corner of Broadway and 79th, what should be looming above us but the famous Apthorp building. I read about, and fell in love with, the Apthorp after reading Nora Ephron's essay, "Moving On," about living (and ultimately getting priced out of) there. It really is a magnificent building, and if we had a salary that was ten thousand times bigger than it currently is, maybe we could live there, too.

Hey, a girl can dream, can't she?

Is Zabars THE cheese place or is that somewhere else? The one w/ really cheap imported cheese . . .

Emily, you're thinking of the place near Union Square. Not sure what it's called, but Nayat does, if Lindsay doesn't. I think Kristin's been there too.

It's funny, I lived in NYC for 28 years and learned more about it from reading the blogs of you guys! Best B&Ws and I didn't know about it? Unbelievable!

Looks like the boys had a blast at the museum :)

I think the cheese place you're thinking of is East Village Cheese -- kind of near Union Square. Zabar's has a cheese selection that's about as big, though I'm not sure how the prices compare.

And yes, Kelly, try a B&W from Zabar's. You won't regret it.
