his first day of primary

(After he finished getting dressed he took one look at himself and exclaimed, "Oh, I handsome! I so cute!")

Today was Garrett's first day of Primary. We've had several discussions over the last few weeks about how he wouldn't be going to nursery anymore, but that instead he'd be in the Sunbeam class. We talked about how Joey would be in the class with him, that Darion's mom would be his teacher and that he'd get to learn about Jesus and sing songs. We talked about how there wouldn't be toys in his new class, and that was okay because he was getting bigger, and that maybe there sometimes might be snacks, but to not get his hopes up.

The more we talked about it, the more excited he got. He spent the entire bus ride to church periodically pulling me down close so he could tell me all about what he was going to get to do at church today. Even so, I panicked a little when, after Sacrament Meeting ended, he happily told me, "We go nursery!"

"Ummm," I started to say, but he cut me off with a smile as he scrunched up his nose and said, "Nooo. I go Sunbeam!"

And he did. And he loved it. The report from his teacher afterward was that he did great: he sat in his chair the entire time and happily participated. He got nervous only once, and apparently only for a short time, when everyone gathered in the Primary room for Singing Time. She suspects that all those bigger kids coming into the room made the Primary experience momentarily overwhelming for Garrett.

The report from Garrett is that he wants to go back next Sunday. After all, he told me, "I a Sunbeam! I wike it!"

Garrett looks like he shined brightly as a sunbeam! I would have loved to see him there.

I don't know why but this made me cry a little. I guess just because I feel like that big-little boy was JUST born and how is it even possible that he's a Primary dude already. Even though I've never met him I feel like I know him. Seriously, if I met your kids in real life I'd probably scare them to death cause I'd just swoop them up and squeeze them like they were my own. Or at least my nephews.

Yay for Garrett! And yay for you--these kid milestones are just as much mommy milestones.

Oh, I have to tell you I taught both the singing time and Sharing time and every time I looked down at Garrett he was smiling at me exactly like in the pictures. It was so validating to me to know he was enjoying the lesson. He even volunteered. What a sweetheart!

So cute. What a handsome little sunbeam. He's just beaming in these pictures. Here's to hoping he continues to "wike it".
