growing boys

Earlier this week I took Caleb in for his 2-year well check-up. Garrett, of course, tagged along, and as it happened, both boys ended up getting examined and vaccinated. Here's the breakdown for each of them.

Caleb is growing just as he should, both physically and developmentally. He still passionately hates doctors, and his screams gave the pediatrician a great indication of how well his lungs are functioning. As he was listening to his heart, the doctor mentioned that he must be a good runner since his resting heart rate was so good. He is at that ... and a good climber and a good jumper ...

Throughout his life he's mostly been measuring between the 50th and 75th percentiles for height and weight. At this visit however, he jumped higher on the charts. Turns out all those moms at the playground who comment how tall he is for his age were right. Here are his stats:

Weight: 28 lbs 8 oz
Height: 37.5 inches (though his hair usually adds an additional 2 inches)

He received a hepatitis booster shot (the last of his childhood vaccines until he turns 4!) as well as this year's flu shot. The flu shot left him feverish and not himself the next day, but he has since bounced back. If the mere presence of a doctor sends him into crazed hysterics, I'll just let you imagine what administering shots is like. It's not pretty, which makes me wonder how we'll manage the needles required when we go in for his annual routine blood work next week.

Garrett, as we waited for Caleb's exam to begin, commented to me how happy he was that Caleb would be getting shots but he wouldn't. Unfortunately for him, the doctor, after our conversation about flu shots, agreed to give Garrett his while we were there to save us another trip. Garrett was not happy about this turn of events, but he was brave just the same.

In order to receive the shot, he had to be briefly examined to make sure that he was healthy and that his height and weight were current. Here are his stats:

Weight: 34 lbs
Height: 41 inches

He's already put on a pound and an inch since his 4-year well check-up two months ago! But a growth spurt wouldn't be a bad thing for him, seeing as how quickly Caleb is catching up! "I doing growing, Mom," he often tells me (especially when he's doing well eating his dinner). "I a growing boy!"

Yes he is -- they both are. ("And," as I often find myself reminding them, "if you want to keep growing, keep eating those beans.")

Caleb is tall! Ethan just went to the doctors yesterday and was 37 inches and he'll be three this month.

Good job on growing! I also love Caleb's additional hair height!
