more doctor visits

For a group of people who have not been sick, our family sure has had a lot of doctor appointments lately. They've been well visits and follow-ups, mostly, with one that was prescribed for investigative purposes.

Yesterday I took Garrett in for his 5-year well check-up. The highlight for him was, oddly, getting to give a urine sample. The highlight for me was hearing that he continues to grow just fine. The low point for both of us was making sure he was up to date with his shots for Kindergarten. At least now he's done with vaccines until he turns 10. He passed his eye exam with 20/30 vision, which is fine for someone his age. However, if it doesn't improve over the next year, we'll be visiting an optometrist. (And if it doesn't happen next year, it will eventually; his genetics have already doomed him to be dealt poor eyesight.)

Here are his current stats:

Weight: 38 lbs
Height: 43 inches

He's hovering right around the 50th percentile for both, which is right on par for his growth record. And he's got one more inch of free ridership on New York City public transportation.

To mark his 5-year milestone even further, this morning we discovered that his first baby tooth is loose. I always thought that children lost their baby teeth in a pattern similar to how they grew them, and since Garrett's first tooth didn't sprout until he was about 10 months old, I was sure he wouldn't lose his first tooth until near the end of his Kindergarten year. But now it's looking like he'll start school with a bottom one missing. While I'm a little surprised at this development (and a little sad that the first phase of his awkward years has just about started), Garrett couldn't be more thrilled.

Garrett's silly streak has reached a new level: he makes this face whenever I pull out the camera, and he thinks it's hilarious to call people "dude."

You may recall that at Matthew's 2-month appointment, the pediatrician heard a heart murmur. He suspected that it was innocent, or at most something that would correct itself with time. But just to make sure, he referred us to a pediatric cardiologist, who we visited this morning. Matthew was a trooper through both an EKG and a sonogram. The EKG read normally, and even though even I could see and hear the heart murmur on the sonogram, everything is ultimately fine. The doctor was Indian, and it was a little challenging to understand him through his accent, but apparently the cause of the murmur is completely normal -- you can hear it in some kids and in others you can't, and Matthew apparently falls in the former category.

As a part of routine procedure, Matthew's measurements were taken. And oh my, has he grown! Here's where he's currently at:

Weight: 13 lbs 14 oz
Length: 23 3/4 inches

It's hard to believe that this nearly 14 pound hulk was born prematurely 2 1/2 months ago, and such a relief that he is healthy and growing.

Judging by how often his thumb has found its way to his mouth recently, I think we might have produced another finger sucker.

I've probably told you the story of when Blake was that age and had to give the urine sample ... if not, I'll fill you in. It gave me a laugh! Happy to hear that Matthew's murmur isn't concerning the dr. And, Garrett gave me a kick on Sunday with his faces and "Bye, dude!"

My son Asher will be 7 in December and still has never had a loose tooth. Dentist says there's nothing to worry about but he would be green with envy if he heard that Garret was losing his first before kindergarten!

Our once preemie J still has a heart murmur. Sometimes the doctor can hear it, sometimes he can't. It doesn't stop her from running a 7 minute mile, so I'm guessing Matthew's won't slow him down at all either. :) Obviously it's not slowing his growing down! Wow. Cute boys.
