the moment i've been waiting for

"Hold my hand, Garrett!" Caleb requested on a recent walk to the playground.

"Okay!" Garrett said as he intertwined his fingers with his brother's.

They walked hand-in-hand the entire way to the park. When I commented that I really liked it when they were nice to each other, Garrett replied, "Yeah, Caybo is my best friend. (And Sofia, too)," he added, lest there was even a remote possibility that, despite his incessant reminders, I might forget that.

I've been waiting for this moment since before Caleb was born -- since we knew that Garrett's first sibling would be a little brother. It has long been my hope that these boys could be good friends as well as brothers. As Caleb has grown, and matured into someone whom Garrett finds companionable, they've demonstrated their ability to not only enjoy but often delight in one another's company, but this was one of the first times it had been vocalized in my hearing.

(Of course, they fight like best friends, too, their violent arguments swinging up and down as frequently and suddenly as their declarations of friendship. But this is not a post in which I want to emphasize the fighting.)

And now, as we all await the arrival of another baby brother, it is my hope that these two can make room for a third.

Isn't that the best!? I love it! I'm sure they'll make room for a 3rd. (And I totally hear you on the fighting too! My boys are CRAZY fighters/teasers/annoyers... but when they are getting along it is all worth it!)

Sooooo sweet!!! I love when my boys act like friends and put the fighting on the back burner. This is a great picture!

They're so cute! On occasion my kids #2 and #3 will hold hands but for the most part they just fight.
