wading through motherhood with all my ducks in a row

out with the old, in with the new

2011 was a hard year. (Any year that wraps up with therapy sessions for anxiety and depression by nature probably can't have been that spectacular, really.) I am ready to see it put behind me. But as I look forward to 2012, I'm finding that it isn't as easy as I thought it'd be to hope that it will be much better. There will, of course, be plenty of good to anticipate, but with that good will come a lot of change, and dealing with change is not something I'm particularly good at.

For example, in a few weeks we'll be able to drive a car we own around Brooklyn. (Have you heard? We bought a car! A 2004 Honda Pilot that is currently waiting for Blake and Garrett to retrieve it from San Antonio, which they'll be doing soon.) While I'm not particularly anxious to drive in New York City, it will be oh-so nice not to have to take the bus to church anymore.

In the spring we'll welcome our third musketeer, which I am of course thrilled about (and not just because this pregnancy is wearing me out). But the addition of another child into our family is an adjustment that takes time, and I'm still not entirely sure how we'll physically fit him into our current square footage.

In the fall Garrett will begin Kindergarten, which is another exciting thing, so long as I can figure out how to maneuver both the application process (yes, in NYC you must apply to Kindergarten) and the enrollment in Special Ed so that he can continue to receive speech (and also possibly occupational) therapy.

But I suppose that most of my anxieties will take care of themselves with time, patience, and, in some cases, a little practice in parallel street parking. And perhaps, with a little luck and likely a lot of hard work, 2012 will turn out to be a great year.

In the meantime I'm going to stay up late tonight and stuff myself silly at our annual all-you-can-eat ice cream extravaganza. (Because, have you heard? Ice cream makes everything better.)

That makes two of us in therapy for anxiety and depression. I know how NOT fun it is. I've been going since I was 9.

I hope this coming year will be a marvelous one for you! You DO have a lot to look forward to, but I also know there will be some very hard times ahead too. Adjusting to three children is not easy but what a blessing to have another little child of God coming into your family! I can't wait to see who this little person is!

By the way, the hubby and I will be in New York in July and if we can, we'd love to come by and see you and Blake and kiddos. I'm not sure about the time constraints at this point because I'll be going to certify for more self-defense in Buffalo but we're making it a point to visit Manhattan and New York City while we're in the state. I'll let you know more as we get closer. In the meantime, I look forward to continuing reading your blog, keeping up with your beautiful family and reading the funny things you write. I really enjoy your blog!

(Oh, I came across some funny pen pal letters you wrote to me in our teenage years. What memories!)

Congrats on the car! I'm super excited for you not to have to take the bus to church!

I too had a very difficult year and I wish we both have a super spectacular 2012!

Best wishes for smooth transitions and changes in 2012. I hope they'll bring with them nothing but joy (if parellel parking in the city can really do that).

You can add me to the list of people anxious to see this year come to a close. I think ushering it out with some tasty ice cream is a brilliant idea!

I have mixed emotions about the coming year. I'm trying to be optimistic, but the past few months have been trying. And this California vacation is going to make it that much harder to head back to NY.

If they need a place to stay on the way home they're welcome chez-nous!!

2011 wasn't my favorite either. Good luck to us both for this upcoming year.

It is hard to be hopeful when things seem bad. You do a great job! Thanks for reminding me to be positive.
