fathers and sons

Fact: It is possible to go camping in New York City, and have a relatively authentic wilderness experience, without ever leaving the five boroughs. Sure, you might have to pitch your tent in the overgrown areas (the "fo-west," in Garrett's citified eyes) of a retired airfield and sleep surrounded by abandoned runways, but you still get dirty, there are still lots of bugs, you can still build a campfire and roast marshmallows, so it's still camping. You'll even be treated to encounters with aggressive, urbanized raccoons who, according to Garrett, "sometimes you just have to kill."

Fact: This weekend, Blake, Garrett, and Caleb experienced all of that and more at their first fathers and sons campout held at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. According to their report, the insect-infested bathrooms were a little scary, but aside from that one minor issue, all three managed to last the entire night, and even had some fun in the process. In the morning they got to walk a few yards in one direction to dip their toes and collect shells in the ocean, and a few more yards in the other direction to watch some model airplanes (including one apparently awesome jet fighter) take flight.

Fact: Fathers and sons campouts are awesome; fathers and sons campouts in Brooklyn -- well, who'd have thought?
